Frequently Asked Questions
Why use the parent-coaching model?
Research shows that a parent-coaching/training model is more effective in creating lasting changes for the child rather than when parents or caregivers are left out of the process. (Harriage et al., 2016, Hogan et al. 2015, Cordisco & Strain, 1986, Hassan et al., 2018)
Is this therapy?
Parent coaching can complement other mental health or healthcare services. My practice is not direct therapeutic work with your child rather a model of service delivery. I work alongside mental health providers to assist in recognizing patterns of behaviors so we can adjust the environment to create success.
What is ABA?
ABA is a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. It helps us to understand how behavior works, how it is affected by the environment and how learning takes place. ABA is adapted to meet the needs of each unique person and situation. It is a flexible treattment and often misunderstood. The goal is to increase behaviors that are helpful and decrease behaviors that are harmful or affect learning.
What is your approach?
My background is in the science of behavior analysis focusing on increasing positive behaviors and decreasing challenging behavior. Intervention sessions are focused on working with the caregivers to engage in problem solving why the behaviors are happening, and ways to adjust the environment to equip parents with new skills that create lasting change over time.
I use evidence-based strategies to help you understand and manage your child's behavior; from autism, anxiety, and typical everyday challenges.
We'll work together to:
-
Identify the root causes of behavior
-
Equip you with new skills
-
Strengthen your relationship with your child
What population do you work with?
I work with all families. Applied behavior analysis is adapted to meet the needs of each unique person. There is no one-size-fits all.
How long will it take for behavior to change?
I wish I had a magic number to give but it really depends on how long the behavior has occurred and how committed you are to making change. Behavior change can be fast using behavior analytic strategies that are scientifically researched and effective. Regardless, I will support your through the process.
What should I expect during my sessions?
Building the foundation for success starts with assessment. In a judgement free zone, we'll work together to understand your child's current behaviors.
